An insightful and interesting look at the inter-woven tapestry of minority histories, "Different Mirror" skips around a bit with timelines and I was left a little dizzy with all the loose 'threads' left over. Takaki begins by asking some concrete questions, and doesn't really answer them, simply recounts history. High school students ought to read this, to get a sense of how minorities factored into the fabric of our history, but they will most likely be confused and bored. Good for history buffs (my husband is exploring many of the footnotes for his own follow-up) and college students, but I am sure there are other, more succinct and more deftly-written tomes out there that cover similar topics. Not as 'refreshing' as the publisher would have you think.
