Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest, facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and worse, unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo — alone and unaided — who had to confront the great dragon Smaug, the terror of an entire countryside...

This stirring adventure fantasy begins the tale of the hobbits that was continued by J.R.R. Tolkien in his bestselling epic, The Lord of the Rings.

Review:

"Tolkien's atmospheric fantasy of Middle-earth and the unassuming hobbit who joins a party of dwarves in their quest for a fabled treasure horde is beloved by adults and children alike." Booklist

Review:

"The English-speaking world is divided into those who have read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and those who are going to read them." Sunday Times (London)

Review:

"A finely written saga of dwarves and elves, fearsome goblins and trolls...an exciting epic of travel and magical adventure, all working up to a devastating climax." Observer (London)

"One of the best children's stories of the century." W. H. Auden

I know this book didn't come out in 2011, but with the word that Peter Jackson is going at it again; I thought I would sharpen up. The Hobbit is awesome. Short enough to keep you interested (Lord of The Rings, being an undertaking), but also long enough to create and sustain amazing world building. It has been years since I read this book and I love it.
A real treasure.
