Publisher Comments:

The bestselling author of The Surgeon returns—and so does that chilling novels diabolical villain. Though held behind bars, Warren Hoyt still haunts a helpless city, seeming to bequeath his evil legacy to a student all-too-diligent . . . and all-too-deadly.

It is a boiling hot Boston summer. Adding to the citys woes is a series of shocking crimes, in which wealthy men are made to watch while their wives are brutalized. A sadistic demand that ends in abduction and death.

The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently removed from the citys streets. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least thats what Detective Jane Rizzoli thinks. Forced again to confront the killer who scarred her—literally and figuratively—she is determined to finally end Hoyts awful influence . . . even if it means receiving more resistance from her all-male homicide squad.

But Rizzoli isnt counting on the U.S. governments sudden interest. Or on meeting Special Agent Gabriel Dean, who knows more than he will tell. Most of all, she isnt counting on becoming a target herself, once Hoyt is suddenly free, joining his mysterious blood brother in a vicious vendetta. . . .

Filled with superbly created characters—and the medical and police procedural details that are her trademark—The Apprentice is Tess Gerritsen at her brilliant best. Set in a stunning world where evil is easy to learn and hard to end, this is a thriller by a master who could teach other authors a thing or two.

Gypsi, January 21, 2011 (view all comments by Gypsi)
After having to stay up all night to read The Surgeon, it was with great excitement that I opened The Apprentice, and at first I was not disappointed. A grisly serial killer was beginning to imitate "the Surgeon", who Detective Jane Rissoli had put away a year ago. Given the similarities, she's called in to check out a case outside of Boston, and then becomes lead detective when "the Dominator" strikes again inside Boston.

This had all the elements to be a excellent page turner, but it just fell flat somehow. Where the previous novel left me looking over my shoulder, this one just didn't give me the same thrills. The mystery solution was just not as believable, and the danger and fright elements were just not as jarring. Even the serial killer action just didn't have the same edge to it.

Oh, it was a good enough read; I still read it all in one sitting, because I was curious as to how it ended. But, it simply was not as good as the other two novels I have read by Ms. Gerritsen, simply didn't live up to it's potential. If this had been the first novel I had read by her, it would probably be the last. As it is, I'll just say it is not a good example of her fine writing talent.
