The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living

by Martin Clark

The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In this masterful debut, Martin Clark proves to be the heir apparent of great Southern raconteurs and the envy of more seasoned novelists as he takes us on a frantic tour of the modern south.

Hung over, beaten by the unforgiving sun, bitter at his estranged wife, and dreading the day's docket of petty criminal cases, Judge Evers Wheeling is in need of something on the morning he's accosted by Ruth Esther English. Ruth Esther's strange story certainly is something, and Judge Wheeling finds himself in uncharted territory. Reluctantly agreeing to help Ruth Esther retrieve some stolen money, he recruits his pot-addled brother and a band of merry hangers-on for the big adventure. Raucous road trips, infidelity, suspected killers, winning Lotto tickets, drunken philosophical rants, and at least one naked woman tied to a road sign ensue in The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living, one part legal thriller, one part murder mystery, and all parts all wild.

Review:

"[A] sophisticated legal thriller that is closer to the drug-besotted dadaism of Tom McGuane's early novels than to John Grisham....[A]n enthralling mix of Southern gothic excess and legal procedure." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"In spare yet delightfully idiosyncratic prose, [Clark] captures a drowsy world of beaten dreamers, rendering their pathos and hilarity with the self-assuredness of a seasoned novelist....Call it an illegal thriller." Robert Draper, The New York Times Book Review

Review:

"Clark brings intelligence and a sense of the sinister to the proceedings....Highly enjoyable reading that is fast-moving and full of belly laughs." Library Journal

Review:

"[T]his exhausting though captivating story keeps readers turning the pages if only to discover what new antics Clark has in store for his characters." Nancy Pearl, Booklist

Review:

"This is a grand, rumbling ride through the world of Evers Wheeling and wild company. Clark's novel is without restraint and perhaps without precedent, unless we consider another man with a mission, Ignatius R. Reilly, juggling a steady job, a perpetual hangover, and a fleet of outstanding weirdos. If I did not live such a sheltered existence, this is the book I'd love to write." Kaye Gibbons, author of Ellen Foster

Review:

"Aside from having the best title I've heard in years, Martin Clark's The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living is a wonderfully unique read, charming and funny and touching and twisted, as fresh and tart as a perfect martini. I was crazy about it." James Crumley, author of The Final Country

Synopsis:

Meet Evers Wheeling of Norton, North Carolina. A semidissolute judge, undistracted by children, hobbies, or a fulfilling marriage, he's moving down the road to nowhere at a furious clip — until the morning he's confronted by Ruth Esther English, an attractive young woman whose dim-witted brother happens to be up on drug charges. Within days, Evers is the Englishes' reluctant coconspirator, abetted by his pothead brother Pascal (he of the double-wide trailer) and Pascal's faux-white-trash cohorts. And his suddenly outlandish life includes an interstate treasure hunt, a baffling murder trial, and a love-interest attorney who considers him the poster boy for the sexist and racist legal establishment.
