Synopsis:

Author Patricia McMahon takes us backstage with the Dancing Wheels dance company and into the lives of two young dancers and#151; Jenny, a and#147;sit-downand#8221; dancer, and her partner Devin, a and#147;stand-upand#8221; dancer. She also introduces readers to the woman who founded the company, Mary Verdi-Fletcher. Mary was born with spina bifida but always dreamed of becoming a dancer. When she grew up, she not only fulfilled that dream, she made it possible for others to follow in her path.

Photographer John Godt has captured the daily hard work and joyful moments in the studio as well as the incredible transformation of the dancers after months of preparation. Once they are onstage, a special, almost indescribable magic occurs and#151; a dramatic choreography of wheels, arms, legs, color, costumes, lighting, music, and movement: the magic of Dancing Wheels.

About the Author

John Godt is a professional photographer who lives in Shaker Heights, Ohio, with his wife, Karen, and their daughter, Donovan.Patricia McMahon is the author of several highly acclaimed photoessays for children, including ONE BELFAST BOY, praised by THE BULLETIN as "powerful and provocative," and SIX WORDS, MANY TURTLES, and THREE DAYS IN HONG KONG, described by Kirkus Reviews as "an excellent slice of living theater . . . disarmingly matter-of-fact and authentic." She has lived overseas and traveled extensively. Ms. McMahon lives in Houston with her husband and their two children, Conor and Claire.
