#1 New York Timesa bestselling author J. D. Robb takes us to the New York City of 2060, where Lieutenant Eve Dallas faces down a cop killer.

A Amarylis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but sheas been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When sheas taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isnat just aone of us.a

Dallasas friend Chief Medical Examiner Morris and Coltraine had started a serious relationship, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone from Coltraineas squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eveas husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on Coltraineas life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts.

The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve containing Coltraineas guns, badge, and a note from her killer: aYou can have them back. Maybe someday soon, Iall be sending yours to somebody else.a

But Eve Dallas doesnat take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And thatas a promise.

Review:

"At the start of bestseller Robb's megablast 28th novel to feature Lt. Eve Dallas (after Salvation in Death), Eve is dismayed to discover at a Manhattan crime scene that the victim is a friend, Det. Amaryllis Coltraine, who's been fatally zapped by her own stun gun. Dallas uncovers a connection to Coltraine's ex-boyfriend, Alex Ricker, whose father, a notorious criminal serving a life sentence at the Omega Penal Colony, blames Dallas and her husband, Roarke, for his imprisonment. Humorous touches, like the wild poolside wedding shower Dallas must abruptly leave after receiving word of a prime suspect found shot to death, provide relief from the intensity of the murder investigation. In a nice paranormal twist, Dallas uses dream visits with Coltraine to help expose a devious killer whose identity is a stunner. Robb (aka Nora Roberts) has a real gift for keeping this long-running thriller series fresh." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Promises in Death is the latest installment in this excellent series. This time Eve on is the trail of a cop killer. The murder hits close to home because the victim is the lover of Medical Examiner Morris. There is plenty of tension and plot momentum as Eve relentlessly pursues the killer, but there are also the great vignettes that we have come to enjoy as Robb brings back the supporting characters we have grown to love (who were so sadly lacking in the previous installment).

All in all a very solid addition to an excellent series. Robb manages to keep the series alive and, with only a couple of exceptions, these characters don't get stale. Can't wait until the next one.
