Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Readers can't get enough of the #1 New York Times bestselling author.

A favor for Jason, vampire hunter Anita Blake's werewolf lover, puts her in the center of a full-blown scandal that threatens master-vampire Jean-Claude's reign — and makes her a pawn in an ancient vampire queen's new rise to power.

Review:

"The florid 16th Anita Blake novel (after 2007's The Harlequin) updates Anita's endlessly erotic adventures as a living vampire with many weird lovers. Anita serves her vampire sweetie Jean-Claude, Master of the City of St. Louis, obsessed with feeding him and her own need to leech off of others' sexual pleasure or 'ardeur' while retaining her rep as vampire executioner (despite the seeming conflict of interest), U.S. marshal and necromancer. She's also accompanying her bed-buddy Jason Schuyler to visit his dying estranged father in North Carolina. After arriving, Jason's mistaken for his rich cousin Keith Summerland, who's ditched his bride-to-be to run off with the wife of a vampire Master, giving Anita a case to solve between wild orgies with wereanimals. Hamilton chronicles Anita's escapades with a growing air of ennui, which longtime readers can't help sharing as sex increasingly takes the place of plot and character development. (June)" Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

I love the Anita Blake series. I loved it absolutely until Cerulean Sins. I find it hard to like these books still. I read them because I hope that they will regain some of their original fun and mystery. However, I must say I'm really disappointed in the readings of everything from Cerulean Sins to The Harlequin. The Harlequin was something better to read. At the release of Danse Macabre, Hamilton swore she got all of the sex out of her system. She said it was a phase. I trust her in this and continue to read holding onto to that same strand of hope. The sex wasn't the problem, ignoring the main characters' base personalities was the problem. I was hoping the book titled "Blood Noir" would hold more terror, but I suppose it could have been worse. I'm sorry to see so many fans have lost their hope. Sometimes I re-read the first 10 books just hold on to it.

The earlier Anita Blake books scared the crap out of me. I keep reading these in the hope that I'll be terrified again like in Bloody Bones or Blue Moon. The last one to keep my gut churning and me turning the pages was Narcissus in Chains. Please Laurell K. make you next book too frightening to put down again. I need my fix.

What happened to Anita? More importantly, what happened to the plot? Anita Blake has abandoned necromancy for necrophilia, and what was once a good detective story has devolved into formulaic pseudo-erotica. Worst of all, Anita herself has suffered the fate of many a strong woman: she has put aside everything that used to be important to her so she can take care of men. Ladies: there is a whole world of quality erotica and urban fantasy out there, but this series has jumped the shark.
