Publisher Comments:

This chilling NYT bestseller from Anthony Horowitz, "a master of edge-of-your-seat writing" (Booklist, starred) is "an exhilarating read" (Kirkus) that "should attract a strong following" (PW)

As punishment for a crime he didn't really commit, Matt was given a choice: go to jail or go live with an old woman named Mrs. Deverill in a remote town called Lesser Malling.

He should have chosen jail.

A strange and sinister plan is coming together made in Lesser Malling, with Matt at the center of it all. People who try to help him disappear . . . or die. It all ties to an evil place named Raven's Gate - a place whose destiny is horrifyingly intertwined with Matt's own.

About the Author

Anthony Horowitz is the New York Times bestselling author of The Gatekeepers series, Raven's Gate, Evil Star, Nightrise, and Necropolis, as well as the Alex Rider series, which includes Stormbreaker, Point Blank, Skeleton Key, Eagle Strike, Scorpia, Arc Angel, and Snakehead. He lives in London.

I really haven't a bad word to say about the writing of this book. It starts off being seemingly ordinary - a boy who gets caught for a crime, before things start to get strange and you realise that the seemingly ordinary Matt isn't as ordinary as you originally thought. The plot is never too slow, and the suspense makes it a book that you simply just cannot put down! Just be wary of reading the book at night in a dark room.

The only reason I'm giving this four stars instead of five is because of the publishing company. I'm very disappointed by scholastic and the editing and censorship they have done to the book. Having read the UK edition first, I noticed a number of changes. Not only is the book around 50 pages shorter, but some scenes are completely rewritten just to "make it more appropriate for younger audiences". If you can, I would recommend trying to find the UK edition instead of reading the Scholastic-published one.

I've heard so many bad reviews on this book, and i just dont get why. I read this book because i enjoyed the Alex Rider series, although i thought this would be more to my likeing because im into horror, and it was, i thought the ravens gate books were so much better then the Alex Rider books. Matt is a likeable character, and in no way did i see what was comeing, i had no clue that the town was evil or that he was one of the five, i think the beggining to the series is great, and should have better rateings.
