Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Baby Girl sees the future from the womb, and it's clear the Fifties hold more for her than Elvis Presley and life in a tumble-down trailer.

From the start, Baby Girl believes she's beautiful and special because her beautiful and special Momma tells her so. The two are close as crossed fingers–and it's a good thing, because Baby Girl's Sight never warns her what her treacherous father will do next. She and Momma must flee into the night. In the distant town of Cot, each contributes to the family fortune with her own gift–Momma at the sewing machine, Baby Girl predicting futures. In the peace of that summer, Baby Girl's confidence grows robust as her sturdy little figure.

It's quite a shock, that first day of high school, when the kids don't find her as adorable as Momma does. Her confidence shrinks down to the size of a Lifesaver until she finds ways to make her differences work for her. An accordion, a quirky new friendship, and a romance with the same boy her enemy-cheerleader is after, return Baby Girl to her feisty best. But nothing can prepare her for the final nightmare–the one that can forever end her magical, hard-knock journey toward growing up.

Review:

“This commanding debut novel of eccentric outsiders shaking things up in a small town features a narrative voice of startling originality.” –Publishers Weekly, Starred

"This unsual novel ... contains a striking combination of tragedy and whimsy." –The Horn Book Magazine, Starred

Synopsis:

When Baby Girl and her beautiful mother flee her abusive father, they enjoy the perfect summer building a new life in their new hometown, reveling in their special bond. Each contributes to the family fortune–Mama by designing lovely dresses and Baby Girl by sharing her gift of “sight” with the customers. But Baby Girl can’t predict her own future, so when school starts at Cot High School, she’s unprepared for the brutal cruelty of her new peers. She’s not special to them, she’s just different–and in this new world, where looks count more than character, no one wants to be different. Facing the gradual erosion of her confidence, Baby Girl learns to look inside–not to see the future, but to discover the strength to be true to herself.

This was a pretty darn good book. I picked up the hardback because it has an accordion playin' girl on the cover, and I run a punk-rock accordion radio show. It doesn't have that much squeezebox in it, which is ok, and it's pretty brutal if young people aren't ready for violence with real consequences. But I really liked the characters, and the voice of the young girl was very believable, kind of southern, kinda Okey, totally consistant and not fake at all. That narrative voice was the best part, and is worth reading the book for. I'd love to hear more from her and I'll be checking out Ms. Vance's other books.
