Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

As soon as Anne Shirley arrives at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she is sure she wants to stay forever...but will the Cuthberts send her back to the orphanage? Anne knows she's not what they expected-a skinny girl with fiery red hair and a temper to match. If only she can convince them to let her stay, she'll try very hard not to keep rushing headlong into scrapes and blurting out the first thing that comes to her mind. Anne is not like anybody else, the Cuthberts agree; she is special-a girl with an enormous imagination. This orphan girl dreams of the day when she can call herself Anne of Green Gables.

Synopsis:

Orphaned Anne Shirley has no idea what to expect when she comes to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. But they, and everyone else on Prince Edward Island, soon come to love her irrepressible personality and imagination.

Susie Salmon is a normal fourteen year-old girl, until she meets a strange man in a corn field. She has a feeling that something is wrong, but does not leave. That would be impolite. He lures her underground into a “hangout.” Susie follows him, not knowing that she will not leave alive. Unable to escape or even scream, she is raped and killed. From the blood and earth, she rises to heaven. However, she will need to adjust to this new place. Here, she can have anything she wants, except her greatest desire: for her murderer to be dead and herself to be alive. Unable to let go, Susie watches life on earth continue without her. Her little sister grows up past her, her friends trade rumors about her death, and her family suffers. The police look for remains, unaware that they are in a safe in the local sink-hole. As time goes on, her father’s suspicion of their creepy neighbor, Mr. Harvey grows. He would do anything to assuage the death of his little girl, including trying to convince the police that Mr. Harvey is the culprit, when there is no evidence to prove this. Mr. Salmon’s rage and determination tears the already torn family farther apart.
Alice Sebold’s tale will steal your heart. You will feel empathy for Susie, and everybody involved in her death from the beginning. This story doesn’t skip a beat. The beginning will grab you, and pull you through the rest of the story. It will put you on the edge of your seat, make you cry, make you laugh, and make you see the joy through the tragedy. This book is for mature audiences, as there is sex and explicit language. This stunning novel is a must-read.

11-year old Anne Shirley is adopted by brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. Anne's rather vivid imagination (and strong dislike of her decidedly red hair), gets her into various funny "scrapes," including accidentally dyeing her hair green. Despite such set-backs, under the care of Matthew and Marilla, Anne blossoms from an unwanted, unloved orphan girl into a kind, intelligent, and lovely young woman (she is 16 at the end of this book). Montgomery had a talent for bringing her characters and even Prince Edward Island to life, and though this was published 100 years ago, "Anne" still seems "fresh" today. I have read Anne at least ten times.

FYI-- Anne of Green Gables, is Canada's best-selling novel of all time, and has sold millions of copies in over 36 languages, including Swedish, French, Polish, Japanese, Icelandic, Arabic and Hebrew. It has been adapted for the stage, screen and even into an anime cartoon! To commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the publication of the first Anne book, PEI is hosting a year-long celebration (http://www.anne2008.com).
