Publisher Comments:

First in the USA Today bestselling author's new paranormal mystery series

There are other worlds with mysteries to solve.

Worlds where not all of the suspects are technically alive.

That's when Karma kicks in.

Karma Marx exorcises haunted houses, sending troublesome poltergeists and other spirits to the ever after. But one assignment traps Karma, her foster child, her sleazy soon-to-be-ex husband, Spider, and his crooked partner under one roof. And when Spider turns up dead, it's a locked house mystery, and Karma's determined to reveal the truth, even if it means tackling all of the mansion's inhabitants-mortal and otherwise...

Review:

"Part-human, part-otherworldly exorcist Karma Marx agrees to clear her oily human husband Spider's haunted house in exchange for an uncontested divorce. At the house on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, she finds a poltergeist cop named Adam who claims that he, rather than Spider, owns the house; a psychic, Savannah; a bunch of imps who keep turning up, and many other denizens — almost all of whom have a reason to hate Spider. When he's found dead, suspects abound; thanks to a seal that Adam places on the house, everyone is trapped for 12 hours, during which Karma and Adam are determined to identify the killer. Marsh (as Katie McAlister, author of The Last of the Red-Hot Vampires) throws in a bit of a twist at the end, but despite lots of noisy activity, the investigation often plods." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Ok, first I should say that "Ghost of a Chance" is by Katie Macalister writing as Kate Marsh. I'm a fan of Macalister's Aisling Grey series and I even like most of her Dark Ones vampires series. So I picked up this book which is shelved in the mystery section.

Second, I should say that this book is written mostly in the first person. So if that bugs you, you've been warned!

Now, this book centers around the character of Karma Marx. She's a paranormal being and ends up assisting Adam, another paranormal being, in a murder investigation involving paranormal beings and a couple of humans. I'm not sure, but this book appears to be written with the possibility of other books to follow using the same/similar characters.

I really didn't enjoy the book very much. The mystery was mystifying, but the denouement was unsatisfying. Yes, the clues were there, but the author intentionally left out the biggest clues regarding the perp. The murderer, although arguably justified, was not discovered via the clues. I guess that is what really bugged me.

This book could very well be fabulous for others. It zipped along at a rapid pace and at 279 pages was a quick read. It just didn't leave me with a good taste in my mouth.
