Harry Dresden returns with a vengeance in Small Favor, the 10th book in the Dresden Files series. If you haven't read any of this series — start now! Jim Butcher sits at the top of the ever-growing list of Urban Fantasy authors. Harry Dresden is the perfect reluctant hero, and Butcher has created one of the most interesting yet believable alternate realities of the genre.

In Small Favor, Harry finds himself caught in a conflict between the winter fairy queen, Mab, and the summer queen, Tatiana. When Harry is forced to repay a favor from Mab by embarking on a mission to save Chicago crime boss Johnny Marcone (even though Harry would sooner see him left alone for his demon kidnappers to torture and kill), he finds himself pursued by all manner of magical creatures, including a group of Billy Goat Gruffs and Hobs. Harry enlists the help of his friends, and all our favorite characters are back on the scene, struggling to stay alive long enough to save the world.

Butcher's plotting is intricate but fast-paced. There are interesting turns of events for some of the regular characters, including Harry, that will please long-term fans. The best quality of this series is that the author always seems to know where he is going with each character in every book, leaving the reader not only entertained, but secure in the knowledge that there is more to Harry's story.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The new novel in the New York Times bestselling Dresden Files series.

No one's tried to kill Harry Dresden for almost an entire year, and his life finally seems to be calming down. For once, the future looks fairly bright. But the past casts one hell of a long shadow.

An old bargain has placed Harry in debt to Mab, monarch of the Winter Court of the Sidhe, the Queen of Air and Darkness-and she's calling in her marker. It's a small favor he can't refuse...one that will trap Harry Dresden between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and one that will strain his skills — and loyalties — to their very limits.

It figures. Everything was going too well to last...

Review:

"Intricate yet accessible plotting and near-Arctic winter weather mark the 10th Harry Dresden adventure from bestseller Butcher (after 2007's White Night). A friendly snowball fight opens the Chicago-based wizard-detective's latest tale, but it's not long before a host of more dangerous foes are out for Harry's blood. A missing human mobster is said to be seeking greater influence among Chicago's extranormal population, but the true threat proves both more subtle and of much greater consequence. Butcher smoothly manages a sizable cast of allies and adversaries, doles out needed backstory with crisp efficiency and sustains just the right balance of hair's-breadth tension and comic relief. Encounters with a series of increasingly dangerous 'Billy Goats Gruff' unfold with particular cleverness, and key developments involving Sgt. Karrin Murphy, Harry's reluctant police liaison, will intrigue seasoned fans as well as newcomers attracted by last year's TV adaptation of the series." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"Packed with the epic battling characteristic of the Dresden Files...this is another fine combination of mystery and fantasy, seasoned by Harry's appalling sense of humor." Booklist

Review:

"Set in a modern Chicago that includes the presence of supernatural creatures, this tale of urban sword and sorcery features compelling characters and superb storytelling and belongs in most libraries. Highly recommended." Library Journal

Just when you think that nothing more can happen to Harry Dresden, Jim Butcher comes up another fantastic adventure for him. I like the fact that Harry still comes across as a regular person who just happens to be a wizard. No matter how powerful and terrifying the villians are, Dresden can't let the bad guys win. This series is absolutely the best of the contemporary urban fantasy genre.
