If you haven't discovered Flashman-19th century English soldier, adventurer, coward, cad, mountebank, & lothario-this is the summer to do it. Flashman finds himself, usually unwittingly, in some of history's most famous battles (charge of the light brigade, Sepoy mutiny, U.S. Civil War) and emerges, despite himself, victorious. Presented as Flashman's "memoirs," this smashing series of books is written with great gusto, verve, detail, and sardonic wit. The "Flashman" novels (12 at last count) are both great fun and historically informative. Think a sort of combination of James Bond, Falstaff, and Black Adder, with more sex. Good show!
