There's nothing like discovering a new favorite author, especially a fairly prolific one. Edna O'Brien writes with an immediacy that carries you on the backs of her characters and prose that transports you much further. Set in the Ireland of several decades past, this novel captures the timeless, slavish search for an object of that most cruel verb, love.
