Form of matrix for displaying solutions to Sudoku in NEWSPAPERS

For the person who, on attempting a Sudoku puzzle and is unable to solve it, looks for the solution displayed elsewhere or published by the newspaper the following day and goes through it, he finds that the solution given is in the form of a matrix of numbers correctly entered in their respective cells. From the given solution, he is not in position to decipher the order in which these numbers ought to be filled in.

It is suggested that instead of displaying just the numbers that should be entered in their respective cells while publishing the solution, it would be definitely more solver friendly if the order in which the matrix of numbers is to be entered in the respective cells, is also displayed. This is especially so for those attempting to solve the puzzle or trying to get familiar with the logic involved in solving the Sudoku puzzles.

In order to do this, each cell could be divided by a diagonal. The numbers that should be entered in the cells could appear in the top half of the cell, while the order in which the numbers are to be entered could appear in the lower half of the cell.

Should there be two or more numbers that could be concurrently entered in their respective cells at any stage of the solution, the number displaying the order of entry would be the same in all such cells. For example, the numbers that are given by the author in the original matrix in which the solver is to make his entries, could all have ‘zeros’ displayed in the lower half of their individual cells. In the cell where the solution to the puzzle is to start, the entry in the lower half of that cell below the diagonal would be ‘one’. Should there be two cells in which these first entries could be simultaneously and independently made, both these cells would have ‘one’ indicated in the lower halves of the cells when the solution to the puzzle is published. The next entry/entries would have ‘two/s’ displayed in the lower half/halves and so on. The solver should at least be able to decipher after which of the ‘ones’, the respective ‘twos’, the ‘threes’ etc. would appear.

This would have more enthusiasts get involved in the game, than to have them give up if a solution is not found. It is a game that helps individuals in developing their mental abilities and getting their mental skills honed.

Thank you for the game. I would appreciate if this suggestion could be incorporated while displaying the solutions to Sudoku puzzles.

Regards

George Vergese
