Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

With her fine eye for historical detail, Tracy Chevalier writes a romantic, sweeping, and thoroughly engaging story about William Blake's London. Sure to bring an age alive, Burning Bright promises to be one of the most-anticipated books of the year.

Review:

"'Burning Bright' derives its title from the opening phrase of William Blake's great poem: 'Tyger, tyger, burning bright/ In the forests of the night. ...' When one learns that this novel's author is Tracy Chevalier, it follows as the night the day that we will enter the world of Blake's London and find 'fearful symmetry' there. If not precisely formulaic, Chevalier has by now established a formula... Washington Post Book Review (read the entire Washington Post review)

Review:

"The Blake connection, however, feels contrived and distracts from the plot, which weakens and loses steam after such a strong beginning — a minor quibble for fans of the genre or the author." Library Jounral

Review:

"A story rich in background but lacking a compelling center." Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis:

London 1792. The Kellaways move from familiar rural Dorset to the tumult of a cramped, unforgiving city. They are leaving behind a terrible loss, a blow that only a completely new life may soften. Against the backdrop of a city jittery over the increasingly bloody French Revolution, a surprising bond forms between Jem, the youngest Kellaway boy, and streetwise Londoner Maggie Butterfield. Their friendship takes a dramatic turn when they become entangled in the life of their neighbour, the printer, poet and radical, William Blake. He is a guiding spirit as Jem and Maggie navigate the unpredictable, exhilarating passage from innocence to experience. Their journey inspires one of Blake's most entrancing works.

Chevalier continues her skill of telling the story of average people who encounter great historical persons. Here a humble 18th c. village chairmaker, Thomas Kellaway, moves his family to London at the invitation of a circus owner, in order to start over after an emotionally paralyzing personal tragedy. In London, the teen Kellaway children face challenges of urban life. Among them is an enduring friendship and attachment to William Blake, their next-door neighbor. The poet's evolving views of good and evil in the world, later expressed in his Songs of Innocence and Experience, are brought into focus through his relationship with the Kellaway children. Their shared experiences with other, street-wise, London teens, shapes an unforgettable and completely believable piece of historical fiction. Chevalier's unique manner of bringing the great artist/writer down to a human scale, expands on her earlier impeccably researched and written novels, Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Virgin Blue.

While William Blake may not be a central character in "Burning Bright", his "Songs of Innocence and Experience" are, both in name and the way Chevalier brings them each to life, showing us the London that inspired Blake to write them. I had perused them before but after finishing this book, I read them with a whole new understanding and a much greater appreciation.

Tracy Chevalier brings 18th century London to life through the eyes of a recently arrived family from the country. The sights, sounds, and smells that the author describes paint a picture of what living in Londont at that time must have been like. The inclusion of William Blake as a character is interesting but not really necessary to the action. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a lively and exciting historical read.
