Publisher Comments:

Ken Follett has 90 million readers worldwide. The Pillars of the Earth is his bestselling book of all time. Now, eighteen years after the publication of The Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follett has written the most-anticipated sequel of the year — World Without End.

In 1989 Ken Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, a sweeping epic novel set in twelfth-century England centered on the building of a cathedral and many of the hundreds of lives it affected. Critics were overwhelmed — "it will hold you, fascinate you, surround you" (Chicago Tribune) — and readers everywhere hoped for a sequel.

World Without End takes place in the same town of Kingsbridge, two centuries after the townspeople finished building the exquisite Gothic cathedral that was at the heart of The Pillars of the Earth. The cathedral and the priory are again at the center of a web of love and hate, greed and pride, ambition and revenge, but this sequel stands on its own. This time the men and women of an extraordinary cast of characters find themselves at a crossroad of new ideas about medicine, commerce, architecture, and justice. In a world where proponents of the old ways fiercely battle those with progressive minds, the intrigue and tension quickly reach a boiling point against the devastating backdrop of the greatest natural disaster ever to strike the human race the Black Death.

Three years in the writing, and nearly eighteen years since its predecessor, World Without End breathes new life into the epic historical novel and once again shows that Ken Follett is a masterful author writing at the top of his craft.

Review:

"The millions of readers who enjoyed Ken Follett's 'Pillars of the Earth' (1989) will certainly enjoy its sequel, 'World Without End.' While it would be grossly unfair to say that it's the same book with different characters, the similarities of structure give a definite feeling of deja vu. Set in the 14th century, 200 years after 'Pillars,' the story again takes place in Kingsbridge, England, and... Washington Post Book Review (read the entire Washington Post review)

"[A]n amazingly well-researched, intricately plotted, richly detailed novel that, while long in pages, never sprawls or flags....Follet has complete mastery over his material, and the result is a novel destined for the best-seller lists." Booklist

"A lively entertainment for fans of The Once and Future King, The Lord of the Rings and other multi-layered epics." Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

Review:

"The 1,014 pages of this historical saga is exactly what it's meant to be: a page turner, and the novel that anyone who loved Pillars will want to read." Cleveland Plain Dealer

Synopsis:

In 1989, Follett astonished the literary world with The Pillars of the Earth, a sweeping epic novel set in 12th-century England that centered on the building of a cathedral and the hundreds of lives it affected. This sequel takes place in the same town of Kingsbridge, two centuries later.

Synopsis:

A thirteen-year-old Welsh boy enters a man's world in the mining pits; an American law student rejected by love finds a surprising new career in Woodrow Wilson's White House; a housekeeper for the aristocratic Fitzherberts takes a fateful step above her station, while Lady Maud Fitzherbert herself crosses deep into forbidden territory when she falls in love with a German spy; and two orphaned Russian brothers embark on radically different paths when their plan to emigrate to America falls afoul of war, conscription, and revolution.

From the dirt and danger of a coal mine to the glittering chandeliers of a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms of the mighty, Fall of Giants takes readers into the inextricably entangled fates of five families-and into a century that we thought we knew, but that now will never seem the same again.

I loved this book, as much as pillars of the earth. I didn't care so much for book one of his new trilogy however that is the first book of his I wasn't mad about.

I had enjoyed Pillars of the Earth a great deal and I had mixed emotions about picking up the sequel: excitement about re-engaging with the communities of Kingsbridge and Shiring, but also hesitation that the quality might not continue. Follett delivered spectacularly! I couldn't put it down and my only complaint is that there isn't a third book. This is definitely a must read for anyone who enjoys medieval history, or just a great novel with profound characters.

Awesome sequel...the only book that could move PILLARS OF THE EARTH off the top of my "must read" list.
