Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Ten of millions Americans suffer from alcoholism, yet most people still wrongly believe that alcoholism is a psychological or moral problem, and that it can be cured by psychotherapy or sheer will power. Based on groundbreaking scientific research, "Under The Influence" examine the physical factors that set alcoholics and non-alcoholics apart, and suggests a bold, stigma-free way of understanding and treating the alcoholic. How to tell if someone you know is an alcoholic. The progressive stages of alcoholism. How to get an alcoholic into treatment — and how to choose a treatment program. Why frequently prescribed drugs can be dangerous — even fatal — for alcoholics. How to ensure a lasting recovery.

Review:

"Vital, simple, world-changing information." — Co-Evolution Quarterly

Review:

"Under The Influence will advance by light years the understanding of alcoholism and the recovery process." — Mel Schulstad, Cofounder, National Association of Alcoholism Counselors

This is an excellent discussion of the physical vs pyschological drivers of alcoholism. Makes the case that alcoholism is a disease which has clear and effective treatment solutions. Excellent for the alcoholic, the family, the friends of alcholics. A must read for those on the path of understanding and recovery. Too bad it's out of print. I enjoyed reading it in hardcover.

This book was suggested to me by my counselor while I was in outpatient recovery. The time was right for me to read it, and if you're ready to step out of the darkness and embrace life for real this is a mind blowing tool. If your not an alcoholic or if you are looking to help someone who is suffering from alcohol abuse, this is also a very educational read. Easy to understand and full of information they should have told us about in school. Even if you aren't a problem drinker, once you read what this substance actually does to your brain and body, you may think twice about that after work cocktail. ~Dolores (8 years sober)
