The Elegant Gathering of White Snows

by Kris Radish

The Elegant Gathering of White Snows Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Just after midnight in a small town in Wisconsin, eight women begin walking together down a rural highway. Career women, housewives, mothers, divorcées, and one ex-prom queen, they are close friends who have been meeting every Thursday night for years, sharing food, wine, and their deepest secrets. But on this particular Thursday, Susan, Alice, Chris, Sandy, Gail, Mary, Joanne, and Janice decide to disappear from their own lives.

Their spontaneous pilgrimage attracts national attention and inspires other women from all across the country. As the miles fall away and the women forge ahead on their backroads odyssey — leaving small miracles in their wake — each of their histories unfolds, tales of shattered dreams and unexpected renewal, of thwarted love affairs and precious second chances. In luminous, heartwarming prose, Kris Radish deftly interweaves the women's intimate confessions into the story of their brave, history-making walk.

A breathtaking achievement, The Elegant Gathering of White Snows tells an incomparable tale of friendship and love, loss and liberation.

Review:

"A rallying cry for the empowerment of women, Radish's novel is also a celebration of the strong bond that exists between female friends." Booklist

Review:

I wish I could buy a copy for every woman I've ever met." Book Sense

Radish's book is somewhat enjoyable, but I would not read any of her other books. "Gathering" is a bit strident at times, as well as faulty stylistically; I don't read novels to be yelled at about feminism, which is how this book often feels. If you are looking for gentle, fun, or better written novels of female friendship, turn to authors Lorna Landvik(fun), Jennifer Chiaverini(gentle), and Joan Medlicott(both).

Read Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral and enjoyed it so much, decided to read The Elegant Gathering of White Snows. SInce I'm of that "certain age", I can relate to much of what these eight women were experiencing and the depth of their friendship. Their wish to remain true to themselves and to each other and their recognition of their own worth was what many of us went through before finally "settling down." I loved the writing, the descriptions, and the language. A bit overdone, perhaps, and a bit too long, but a really great read.
