14 year old Melissa D'Agostino, and mentally retarded, is murdered. Her body is found at the bottom of a run off in a cow pasture. Police Chief Nalen Storrow, or Flowering Dogwood, Me. is in charge.

Nalen is deeply troubled. He had moved from a city police force to his current job for his family's security. He feels like a crime like this shouldn't happen in his quiet town. He is also protective about his 9 year old daughter, Rachel. Additionally, he is afraid that his 18 year old son Billy might be involved in the killing. The first part of the novel ends with Nalen attempting to deal with his mounting stress.

Eighteen year go by. Rachel is now a detective on the job and decides to reopen the still unsolved crime.

Billy is now a teacher's aide in a school for blind and special needs students. The students love both Billy and his main classroom teacher, Claire Castillo. However Claire feels compelled to tell Billy that his approach to a sixteen year old female student should be changed because the student although special needs is still a young woman and might misunderstand.

Billy and Claire begin a relationship outside of the classroom when Claire disappears. Rachel investigates, Billy is once again a suspect.

Blanchard has written a thought provoking novel. Her dealing with the disabled children is intelligent and enlightening. Rachel is well drawn as a character.

Towards the end of the novel, when the reason behind the murderer's actions are revealed, I would have liked a better resolution. However, I feel that Blanchard was giving a lesson that in life, all things do not have satisfactory endings and justice does not always prevail.

Highly recommended.
