LISA GARDNER WINNER OF THE ITW AWARD FOR BEST NOVEL*

On a warm summer night, in a working-class Boston neighborhood, four family members are brutally murdered. The father—and possible suspect—clings to life in the ICU. Murder-suicide? Or something even worse? Veteran police detective D. D. Warren is certain of only one thing: There’s more to this case than meets the eye.

Danielle Burton is not only a dedicated nurse at a locked-down pediatric psych ward but the haunted survivor of a shattered life. Meanwhile, devoted mother Victoria Oliver will do anything to ensure that her troubled son has some semblance of a childhood.

The lives of these three women unfold and connect in unexpected ways, as sins from the past emerge—and stunning secrets reveal just how tightly blood ties can bind. Sometimes the most devastating crimes are the ones closest to home.

WOW! What a thrill ride Lisa Gardner provides her readers with this novel! The story was top-notch suspense with layers of relational twists. However, the real surprise for me was learning so much about the immense time, energy and emotional cost parents sacrifice when raising special needs children. The author does an incredible job with her subject matter research, and opened up a new world for me, exposing my unexpected compassion for those parents' plights.

WOW! What a thrill ride Lisa Gardner delivers! Twists and turns, and good-old fashioned suspense every step of the way. The story is told from the main characters' perspectives, giving insight from very different viewpoints. Although this is fiction, the non-fiction subject matter about children in locked-down pediatric psych wards is extremely well-researched. The reader learns about the huge amount of time, energy and sacrifice that many parents and pediatric professionals experience helping these children. The book both educates and entertains you on a non-stop ride!
