About the Author

Sarah Dessen grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and attended UNC-Chapel Hill, graduating with highest honors in Creative Writing. She is the author of eight acclaimed novels; including Just Listen, which spent a total of 18 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and Lock and Key, also a New York Times bestseller. Her first two books, That Summer and Someone Like You, were the basis for the movie How to Deal starring Mandy Moore.

When I first picked this book up, with its mostly-pink cover and cute font, I was wary at first of another superficial teen romance. But when I read it, I was really surprised. More than just a book for girls, Sarah Dessen fleshed out the characters so that I loved them. I understood Auden and felt the struggles of her story. The metaphors of the book were fresh and new. I loved this book... it was like a refreshing drink of water in a world too-altogether populated with shallow teen fiction.

This is one of Dessen's best--the characters are deep, the problems complex, and the message that people are not what they seem on the outside and can change is a positive one. My only complaint is the romance between the main character, Auden, and Eli, an insomniac bike rider who teaches Auden about fun. There is no spark between the characters so that we, the readers, really want to root for them. Sarah Dessen typically paints interesting portraits of teenage boys, I wish Eli was more charismatic, so I could say he was as good as the rest of the book.
