In The Plague, the Algerian city of Oran is set upon by plague and sealed off from the rest of the world, its citizens imprisoned not only with the disease but also with each other. Or are they? By the novel's end, every character is profoundly changed by the necessities of survival... and the reader may be as well.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A haunting tale of human resilience in the face of unrelieved horror, Camus' novel about a bubonic plague ravaging the people of a North African coastal town is a classic of twentieth-century literature.

Review:

"The Plague is parable and sermon, and should be considered as such. The Plague stands or falls by its message. The message is not the highest form of creative art, but it may be of such importance for our time that to dismiss it in the name of artistic criticism would be to blaspheme against the human spirit." New York Times (1948 review)

I've always loved Camus for his glass-is-half-full version of existentialism, and The Plague is my favorite of all his fiction works. It is a vivid picture of the beauty which can be found in an imperfect world.
