Michelle Wildgen: IMG A Few Initial and Not-Comprehensive Meditations on Group Novels

I am a sucker for a book about a group. What reminded me of this was Joanna Smith Rakoff's A Fortunate Age, her homage to Mary McCarthy's endlessly re-readable... Continue »

McKay invites readers into the highly affectionate but incredibly chaotic daily dramas of the Casson family. Engaging, clever characters explore topics ranging from adoption to tomato sandwiches — in other words, life's essential stuff. Profound, hilarious, and completely satisfying.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The four Casson children, whose mother, Eve, is a fine-arts painter, have all been given the names of paint colors. Cadmium (Caddy), is the eldest; then Saffron (Saffy); Indigo, the only boy; and Rose, the youngest. When Saffy discovers quite by accident that she has been adopted, she is deeply upset, though the others assure her that it makes no difference at all. Saffy is the daughter of Eve's twin sister, who lived in Siena, Italy, and died in a car crash. Grandad brought Saffy, as a very small child, back from Siena.

At Grandad's death he leaves something to each of the children. To Saffy, it is "her angel," although no one knows its identity. How Saffy discovers what her angel is, with the help of an energetic new friend, lies at the heart of this enchanting story. Unforgettable characters come alive in often deeply humorous and always absorbing events to be treasured for a long, long time.

Review:

"McKay's...sparkling novel once again introduces an eccentric, entirely engaging British family whose members readers will immediately embrace....[A] memorable portrait of a vastly human family." Publishers Weekly

Review:

"While the story by...is whimsical and amusing, serious undertones are brilliantly conveyed. Character development is superb and insightful." School Library Journal

Review:

"McKay always skillfully draws each clearly defined character back into the story with witty, well-edited details; rapid dialogue; and fine pacing....Readers will hope for a sequel." Booklist, Starred Review

There is something about Hilary McKay's books that make me incredibly happy. Exploring the life of a daft, loving, funny family, McKay treats heavy subjects -- in this case adoption and belonging -- with humor and grace. Read it: you might just fall in love with the Casson family, too.
