Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Composed entirely of short poems in free verse, What My Mother Doesn't Know captures the ups and downs of Sophie's freshman year of high school and her first real romance. She meets Dylan over Labor Day, and immediately she knows they were meant for each other. But as the infatuation wears off, Sophie realizes that she and Dylan have serious differences. She starts flirting with a stranger on-line and finds herself oddly attracted to Murphy, an outsider in her art class. Eventually she breaks up with Dylan, bucks peer pressure, and finds she has a lot more in common with Murphy than she thought.

Synopsis:

Sophie's mother doesn't know about the boy who's pressing Sophie to go further than she wants. Or about the boy she chats with online. These sharp, funny, and tragic poems tell of Sophie's sometimes painful but always passionate journey of self-discovery.

Synopsis:

My name is Sophie.

This book is about me.

It tells

the heart-stoppingly riveting story

of my first love.

And also of my second.

And, okay, my third love too.

It's not that I'm boy crazy.

It's just that even though

I'm almost fifteen

it's like

my mind

and my body

and my heart

just don't seem to be able to agree

on anything.

For me this book was simply okay. After learning it was on the banned/challenge book list like many people my interest was peaked. The reasoning for the ban is all due to one line in the book. That's it.

Books told in verse are quick reads and if you have to like or at least not mind it to read this one.
I don't mind if a book is told in verse or not. I liked this one enough I just wish we knew a little more about who Sophie is not who her latest boyfriend was.

It was a fast read and the book was cute enough. My favorite part was the dance, that the most fun to read. I'd say give this one a try.

This book was so shivante (awesome) it made me want to melt into the arms of Robin too. I've never been in love, but sure do want to be now. It sounds incredible. I appreciate all the thought that went into this book. It took me one hour to read this and I do NOT read fast at all. I can't wait to read all of your other books. They have inspired me to write.

This book is simply wonderful, I enjoyed every drop of it. It's absolute perfection how the author managed to set a story in a sequence of events by composing them in short, and passion filled poems. The feelings and situations that the character goes through are some of the things we just can never tell our mothers because they just don't seem explainable. The thrill and excitement that comes from her everyday endeavors and thoughts will leave you wanting to know what happens next.
