Publisher Comments:

Handsome Cambridge dropout Mark Callender died hanging by the neck with a faint trace of lipstick on his mouth. When the official verdict is suicide, his wealthy father hires fledgling private investigator Cordelia Gray to find out what led him to self-destruction. What she discovers instead is a twisting trail of secrets and sins, and the strong scent of murder.

An Unsuitable Job for a Woman introduces P. D. James's courageous but vulnerable young detective, Cordelia Gray, in a "top-rated puzzle of peril that holds you all the way" (The New York Times).

About the Author

Widely acknowledged as "the greatest contemporary writer of classic crime" (The London Sunday Times) and "the greatest living mystery writer" (People), P. D. James is the author of fifteen mystery novels, including a second Cordelia Gray novel, The Skull Beneath the Skin, and the autobiography Time to Be in Earnest. P. D. James has been awarded major prizes for her crime writing in Great Britain, America, Italy, and Scandinavia, and in 1999 she received the Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster Award for long-term achievement.

P.D. James departs from the adventures of Adam Dalgliesh to bring us a most excellent female sleuth. Cordelia Gray has had, to put it mildly, a very eclectic upbringing. At 22, she finds herself the sole proprieter of a detective agency that's on the skids, and despite the tremendous odds against success, she is determined to make a go of it. Her first case is an odd one: a wealthy scientist hires her to investigate the suicide of his son, Mark. He was estranged from his son, and has a need to know what was behind Mark's decision to take his own life. As Cordelia investigates the matter, however, things become increasingly complicated and she realizes that Mark did not commit suicide -- he was murdered.

I'm disappointed that there's only one other mystery featuring Cordelia Gray; she's a great character and I would have loved to get to know her better.
