The Vanished Man (Lincoln Rhyme Novels)

by Jeffery Deaver

The Vanished Man (Lincoln Rhyme Novels) Cover

Staff Pick

Imagine a killer who's a cross between Hannibal Lecter and David Copperfield!?! Yes, really. I didn't discover Deaver until I read The Vanished Man, his latest. Now I'm a major fan. It's a top-notch thriller — and you'll never again watch a magic show quite the same way.

Publisher Comments:

Forensic expert Lincoln Rhyme and his protégée Amelia Sachs are called in to work the high-profile investigation of a killer who seemingly disappeared into thin air just as the police closed in. As the homicidal illusionist baits them with grisly murders that grow more diabolical with each victim, Rhyme and Sachs must go behind the smoke and mirrors to prevent a horrific act of vengeance that could become the greatest vanishing act of all...

"Well-researched and exciting, this has all the elements of good crime fiction: likable leads, a colorful supporting cast, fascinating scientific analysis, and a look at the secrets of an otherwise unknown world. A sure hit." Booklist

Review:

"[I]nfernally ingenious....There is, of course, a great master design to these elegantly executed illusions, and Deaver is clever enough to string it out to almost unbearable limits of suspense." Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times Book Review

Review:

"Wake up, Scarpetta fans — Lincoln Rhyme is here to blast you out of your stupor." Entertainment Weekly

Review:

"[T]he staggering pile of red herrings Deaver tosses...eventually loses its sheen, and the manhunt ends in a sprawling, anticlimactic third act....All the prodigious energy and ingenuity of a canny performer who just doesn't know when to quit." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"Ingeniously devious....[The] plot is so crooked it could hide behind a spiral staircase." People

Review:

"Regardless of any absence of character growth and complexity, the story is still an engaging one, the kind of entertaining, suspenseful tale that shows the writer's true strengths....[A] crackling thriller with a well-sculpted plot and a fascinating villain." David Montgomery, Chicago Sun-Times

Review:

"A prime Deaver book, not as horrifying as The Bone Collector or Coffin Dancer but just as thrilling, with laughter and gasps of shock assured. And Deaver just doesn't let up with the plot twists." John Orr, San Jose Mercury News

Review:

"[W]ith a simple wave of his word-processing wand [Deaver] continues to resuscitate a tired genre with this often brilliant and starkly original cat-and-mouse game." Jon Land, Providence Journal

"Many authors can trick the reader with one surprise ending, but only Jeffery Deaver can dazzle, delight and downright dupe readers once, twice, even three times before they reach the end of his Lincoln Rhyme novels." Michele Ross, Cleveland Plain Dealer

Review:

"Jeffrey Deaver is one of our major authors in the genres of the thriller and the police procedural because he excels at both plotting and characterization." Pohla Smith, Pittsburgh Post Gazette
