Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Talesby Stephen King
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:International bestselling author Stephen King is in terrifying top form with his first collection of short stories in almost a decade. In this spine-chilling compilation, King takes readers down a road less traveled (for good reason) in the blockbuster e-Book "Riding the Bullet"; bad table service turns bloody when you stop in for "Lunch at the Gotham Café"; and terror becomes déjà vu all over again when you get "That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French" — along with eleven more stories that will keep you awake until daybreak. Enter a nightmarish mindscape of unrelenting horror and shocking revelations that could only come from the imagination of the greatest storyteller of our time. Review:"[C]confirm[s] what King fans have known for years: that the author is not only immensely popular but immensely talented....Fourteen stories, most of them gems, featuring an array of literary approaches....No one does it better." Publishers Weekly Review:"King hasn't ridden the best-seller lists for 25 years by accident; the best of these betcha-can't-read-just-one stories take ideas as old as a haunted hotel room, a visit from the devil, and a picture that comes to life and give them energetic makeovers. (Grade: B+)" Entertainment Weekly Review:"King gathers previously uncollected tales from sources that show his desire to stay fresh by diving into new waters....Less stylish than The Green Mile (or than Poe), though King remains strong in the short form." Kirkus Reviews Review:"The sleepers turn out to be the most appealing pieces in this unpredictable collection....The title story is another standout....Other pieces in Everything's Eventual play to iffier, more acquired tastes." Janet Maslin, The New York Times Review:"When Stephen King is on his game, he is a wonder to behold....Anyone who appreciates a good yarn, especially those for whom a little King goes a long way, should give Everything's Eventual a turn." People Magazine Review:"The collection includes several well-crafted, nuanced stories that stand up to the best being written today, reminding us that Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote horror fiction, after all." Jane Ciabattari, The Washington Post Book World Review:"[C]ompelling....Among the 14 stories...there are a few so brilliantly creepy that some readers will find their brain dendrites still wigged out long after they have finished the book....[King] sure can write." USA Today Review:"Not only do the action-based plots and engaging narratives hold up well...but tales like...'The Man in the Black Suit' show us King at his literary best....[A] milestone in compilations of King's shorter works." Library Journal Synopsis:Stephen King's first collection of stories in nine years, including "Riding the Bullet" — soon to be a major motion picture directed by Mick Garris (Sleepwalkers, The Stand) and starring David Arquette (Scream). Synopsis:The first collection of stories Stephen King has published since Nightmares and Dreamscapes nine years ago, Everything's Eventual includes one O. Henry Prize winner, four stories published by The New Yorker, and "Riding the Bullet," King's original eBook that attracted over half a million online readers and became the most famous short story of the decade.
These intense, eerie, instantly compelling tales about the dead, near-dead, or the plain dread of mundane life uphold King's reputation as the master of all that goes shriek in the night. About the AuthorStephen King is the author of more than fifty books, all of them worldwide bestsellers. Among his most recent are Dreamcatcher, Hearts in Atlantis, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Bag of Bones, the screenplay Storm of the Century, From a Buick 8, and The Green Mile. His acclaimed nonfiction book, On Writing, was also a bestseller. He lives in Bangor, Maine, with his wife, novelist Tabitha King. He recently completed the eagerly awaited final volume of his Dark Tower saga. Table of ContentsContents What I did was take all the spades out of a deck of cards plus a joker. Ace to King = 1-13. Joker = 14. I shuffled the cards and dealt them. The order in which they came out became the order of the stories, based on their position in the list my publisher sent me. And it actually created a very nice balance between the literary stories and the all-out screamers. Next collection: selected by Tarot.
