Publisher Comments:

In the classic spirit of epic fantasy comes this glittering saga of a young girl who learns she possesses an uncanny gift — and is destined to use it to save her world from a terrifying evil.

Maerad is a slave in a desperate and unforgiving settlement, taken there as a child when her family is destroyed in war. She doesn't yet know she has inherited a powerful gift, one that marks her as a member of the noble School of Pellinor and enables her to see the world as no other can. It is only when she is discovered by Cadvan, one of the great Bards of Lirigon, that her true identity and extraordinary destiny unfold. Now, she and her mysterious teacher must embark on a treacherous, uncertain journey through a time and place where the forces of darkness wield an otherworldly terror.

The first book in a projected quartet, Alison Croggon's epic about Maerad and her remarkable yet dangerous gift is a beautiful, unforgettable tale. Presented as a new translation of an ancient text, The Naming evokes the rich and complex landscape of Annar, a legendary world just waiting to be discovered.

Review:

"A plentitude of action and plot surprises ensure a riveting read. Unbelievably fine, this book represents fantasy storytelling at its best." VOYA

Review:

"[A] challenging and fully realized epic adventure." School Library Journal

Review:

"Croggon's characters and environmental descriptions glow with a romantic sensibility and resonate beautifully with archetypal connections to Tolkien." Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis:

I would like to begin by saying that Alison Croggon's writing is beautiful. That being said, there's just too much of it. This often happens for me with fantasy novels - I get bogged down by descriptions. I liked the story of Maerad and Cadvan, and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series (save for maybe The Crow The Third Book of Pellinor because it's about Hem, and I hate changing POV in the middle of a series). But there is only so much description of land, food, pain and wear...more I would like to begin by saying that Alison Croggon's writing is beautiful. That being said, there's just too much of it. I liked the story of Maerad and Cadvan, and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series (save for maybe The Crow The Third Book of Pellinor because it's about Hem, and I hate changing POV in the middle of a series). But there is only so much description of land, food, pain and weariness I can take. I found myself skipping her beautiful descriptions in favor of ferreting out dialogue.

Maerad is a strong female lead and I like Cadvan as her male counterpart. I'm thankful this book is removed from heavy romance, or romance of any kind, really. Instead Croggon focuses on Maerad's understanding of her Gift and Fate.

I think anyone who is fond of J.R.R. Tolkien, Tamora Pierce, Maria V. Snyder, or Shannon Hale will definitely enjoy Maerad's journey and even Croggon's writing style - descriptions and all
