Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When high school sophomore Lucy Norton's father remarries, her life is turned upside down. She and her father move from their West Coast home to a suburb on Long Island. With a small bedroom in the unfinished basement, a wicked stepmother and bratty stepsisters, countless chores, a blank social calendar, and a huge crush on the dashing prince of the varsity basketball team, Lucy’s life has all the makings of a Cinderella story. So with all the characters in place, will Lucy get the prince and live happily ever after?

In this royally funny and romantic novel, Melissa Kantor explores the struggle of finding your true prince and more important — yourself.

Review:

"Kantor caters well to the witty-romance, girl-power book market, supplying a worthy offering for many who might not read otherwise." School Library Journal

Review:

"The easygoing narrative featuring a modern-day Cinderella is sure to attract readers." Hornbook Guide to Children

Synopsis:

Mrs. McBloom, clean up your room!"For nearly fifty years, that's been the refrain of janitors, principals, and students who enter the chaos of Room Five. Now the beloved Mrs. McBloom-who has taught nearly everyone in the town of Up Yonder, even Principal Pumpernickel-is about to retire. Finally, she must clean up her classroom. But where to begin? Years of science experiments have left all kinds of critters hoppin' and cluckin' and flyin' around. Giant sunflowers droop over desks; vines with fat green beans climb the walls; and a full-grown apple tree grows smack-dab in the middle of the floor. There are more books stacked in Room Five than in the Up Yonder Library. And who knows what else lurks in the piles of papers or the lost-and-found box?

Every high school girl out there always dreams of one day becoming a Cinderella. Who wouldn't want to live in a glamorous castle, have a prince charming and a happily ever after? On the other hand, for one girl, it's backwards.

In the novel If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince? by Melissa Kantor, a girl named Lucy Norton thinks of herself as living the life of Cinderella, but in the worst of ways. Her mother is dead, she has a wicked stepmother, two evil stepsisters, and she sleeps in the basement - her life is basically miserable. However, when Connor Pearson, the prince charming of Glen Lake High finally notices her, she actually looks forward to her new happily ever after. Lucy's life will change completely, because the happy ending she gets will come unexpected as she discovers the truth about her prince... and herself.

Melissa Kantor's romantic novel is a funny and lighthearted story that will make readers smile with pleasure. In my overall opinion, I enjoyed the fact that it was relaxed novel, but I thought that it was too predictable. The ending was what I expected it to be. This book holds some important themes as well, such as how happy endings come in different forms. If I Have a Wicked Stepmother, Where's My Prince? is mainly a novel for young teens. I'd highly recommend this title to readers who enjoy a good, modern day retelling of one of their favorite fairy tales, or those who want to read a fun and romantic novel.
