Confessions of a not it girl written by Melissa Kantor takes place in a suburban town in New York. Jan Miller is in her senior year of high school, trying to deal with according to her, her unexciting life. She obsesses over her big butt, writing her college applications and Josh, her new crush that keeps slipping away but eventually completes Jan’s life. All this drama and chaos is shared with her beautiful and poise best friend Rebecca who is the “It Girl” and cover girl of chic magazine. Jan daydreams often fantasizing by putting her life into the Romeo and Juliet scenes that she wishes were real. But her life is know where near perfect especially with her parents she claims is making her life worse. Melissa Kantor does a great job putting humor in overwhelming situations many teenage girls go through. Although her sense of her humor is presented strong you can see that she understands every experience that is happening to Jan. This fresh, fun book opens your eyes to enjoy your life, laugh at your self and deal with what is happening around you. This book really connects the reader to the book by not making the situations to heavy and creating a clumsy, quirky character like Jan. Two golden moments in this story are at the beginning and end of the story making it memorable. The first one is “ Welcome to my life” which is a powerful statement that appears many times in the story presenting different meanings each time. The last, most important quote that the author wraps up the story with is “ Maybe it wasn’t Shakespeare, But it was good enough for me.” This quote states Jan finally realizes her life doesn’t have to be perfect for her to be happy. I definitely recommend this book to any girl who needs a good laugh and just wants to enjoy a book.
