About the Author

Sandow Birk is a recipient of both Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships. His work has been exhibited widely and published in several books. He lives in Long Beach, California. Marcus Sanders is a contributing editor for Surfing and Surfline, and has written for numerous travel and surfing magazines. Born and raised in Canada, he lives in San Francisco.

This is a hip, modern, easy-to-read translation. It’s as easy to understand as the “No Fear Shakespeare” translations. In other words you’ll understand this translation without having to refer to any notes or study guides. It’s as clear as a bell, as easy to read as Hemingway or, for that matter, your morning newspaper. Plus it adds some funny contemporary references to make up for all those old-fashioned outdated references Dante slipped into his poem. I’m a Dante aficionado and have read almost every translation and also the original Italian, and, in my opinion, this is the best English translation. Not that I don’t love the John Ciardi translation (I do; it’s terrific.), but this baby tops them all for clarity and concision. This is a hot (pun intended) translation! A winner on all counts. You won’t be disappointed.

I have not read this book but I am very interested in reading it. I loved the translated version of the Divine Comedy and have become rather obsessed with the story. I have been working on writing my own version of this story.
