Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: The Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War.

Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered, but again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening...again, humans die. And it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery...and the truth.

Nobody had ever won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards two years in a row, until Orson Scott Card received them for Ender's Game and its sequel, Speaker for the Dead, in 1986 and 1987. Card's many SF novels have been translated into several languages.

Winner of both the Hugo and Nebula Awards

"A great read."UPI Reviews

"Less brash than Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead may be a much better book. Don't miss it."Analog

"Told with compassion and keen insight, this powerful sequel [is] highly recommended."Library Journal

"The most powerful work Card has produced. Speaker not only completes Ender's Game, it transcends it."Fantasy Review

Orson Scott Card set a high bar with Ender’s Game and I emphatically say that he not only surpassed that bar, but left it far behind. Speaker for the Dead redefined for me what intricate plot and character depth are.

I love this idea of a Speaker for the Dead, a person who will ask the hard questions of the living to capture the full picture of the life lived of the dead, all the good and the bad. The people of Milagre have various reactions to the Speaker, Andrew Ender Wiggin. Many believe it to be taboo to speak ill of the dead, whether true or not.

This was a complex, beautiful, emotion-wrenching novel. Card’s strength in writing deep characters really shows through in this tale. Couple that with a well-thought out plot that includes details of a culture very different from humans, then you have a fully engaging story.

Easily my favorite book. I think depending on your tastes there a few different directions you can go after Ender's Game. If you are into political stuff you can go for the Shadow stuff, but if you are more interested in the science fiction/aliens/new worlds etc stuff go with Speaker for the Dead and Children of the Mind.
