About the Author

Sam Keith grew up in New England, lived in Alaska for 3 years and taught school in Massachusetts for 26 years. He pass away in Anderson, South Carolina in 2003.

Dick Proenneke grew up in Primrose, Iowa, traveled throughout the western United States and went to Alaska in 1950 where he worked until 1968. Then he build a log cabin at Twin Lakes (now inside Lake Clark National Park) and lived there until 1998, when he moved to Hemet, California where he passed away in 2003.

This book is a work of beauty as is the film, shown periodically on Alaska's public TV channels. Dick Proenneke decided that rather than chance losing his eyesight to crud falling from the bottoms of equipment, he would swap life as a diesel mechanic in Anchorage for that of a homestead cabin at Twin Lakes. This book covers the seasons and explorations of the area, and the skills he developed to handle life, and it was a long one. The Keiths' documentation in film and words complement Dick's own.
