Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Getting Stronger is widely regarded as the best general book on weight training in the world. Author Bill Pearl is a four-time Mr. Universe and bodybuilding legend. Getting Stronger was first published in 1986 and has sold over 550,000 copies in North America. Now, 15 years later, it has been revised.

Here's What's New in Getting Stronger Revised:

  • Women's Bodybuilding ? This chapter has been updated and expanded.
  • Sports Training Principles and Training Concepts for Advanced Athletes — These chapters have been updated with some of the latest information.
  • Weight Training Machines ? We show the new generation of weight training machines, along with websites for further details.
  • Keiser X-Press Training Circuit ? We show you how to train on Keiser machines, starting with 30-minute workouts; this is an especially valuable system for healthy older people.
  • Injuries ? There is a completely new section by Max E. Shott, M.S., P.T., including injury rehab programs for shoulder, knee, and lower back injuries.
  • Nutrition ? There is updated information on proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.
  • Supplements ? There is all-new info on some of the most commonly touted and used supplements: creatine, pyruvate, the "andro" supplements, DHEA, glucosamine, and chondroitin.
  • Drugs ? All this information is new and covers substances that have become more widely available in recent years, and problems that could arise from using them.
  • Recommended Reading ? We list 34 good books on health and fitness.

Here's what hasn't changed:

  • The 70+ easy-to-follow weight training programs
  • The 350 or so exercises with clear instructions
After all, the principles of progressive resistance training remain the same, and the human body hasn't changed much in the past 35,000 years!
