A High Wind in Jamaica

by Richard Hughes

A High Wind in Jamaica Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Richard Hughes's celebrated short novel is a masterpiece of concentrated narrative. Its dreamlike action begins among the decayed plantation houses and overwhelming natural abundance of late nineteenth-century Jamaica, before moving out onto the high seas, as Hughes tells the story of a group of children thrown upon the mercy of a crew of down-at-the-heel pirates. A tale of seduction and betrayal, of accommodation and manipulation, of weird humor and unforeseen violence, this classic of twentieth-century literature is above all an extraordinary reckoning with the secret reasons and otherworldly realities of childhood.

Synopsis:

The dreamlike action of this masterful narrative begins among the decaying plantations of late-nineteenth-century Jamaica. It then moves to the high seas, as Richard Hughes tells the story of a group of children thrown upon the mercy of down-at-the-heels pirates. A tale of seduction and betrayal, of weird humor and unforeseen violence, this twentieth-century classic is an unequaled exploration of the nature, and limits, of innocence.

I read this book as a 12 year old, in Jamaica. Loved it then and am buying it for my 12 year old before our Jamaican vacation. A real high intensity action historical novel. It is about kids, but it can be a haunting read so check it out based on your own tolerance.
