Book News Annotation:The first edition of Tufte's now classic text on the design of
statistical graphics was published in 1983. Tufte published it
himself with the help of a second mortgage in order to have complete
control over the book's design, which he wanted to reflect the
intellectual principles put forth in its contents. That edition saw
17 reprintings. This second edition provides high-resolution color
reproduction of William Playfair's many graphics, adds color to other
images, and includes all the changes and corrections accumulated
since the first edition publication.

John Tukey, Bell Laboratories and Princeton University Review:"The century's best book on statistical graphics." Computing Reviews Review:"A landmark book, a wonderful book." The art here is cognitive art, the graphic display of relations and empirical data, now an indispensable tool of science and engineering." Scientific American Review:"This beautifully typeset, illustrated, and printed large-format volume is an accurate, funny, and downright rude short course in the history and practice of statistical graphics. A touchstone of style." PC Magazine Review:"A classic reference. The overall intention and power of the book is stunning." Optical Engineering Review:"The da Vinci of data." The New York Times Review:"A visual Strunk and White." The Boston Globe Synopsis:The Visual Display of Quantitative Information contains 250 illustrations of the best (and a few of the worst) statistical charts, graphics, and tables, with a detailed analysis of how to display quantitative data for precise, quick, effective analysis.
