Discover Europe's favorite mystery writer. Sweden's Henning Mankell writes a first-rate police procedural that also serves as an indictment of contemporary society. His characters are fully drawn, full of frailties, unexpected courage, and are utterly endearing.

"In the same vein as the complex police procedurals of Ian Rankin comes these books featuring Detective Kurt Wallander. Set in Mankell's native Sweden, these dark and brooding mysteries have a European sensibility reminiscent of recent European crime thrillers like Insomnia and The Vanishing (the original European versions). Mankell is a best-selling author in Europe, and deserves the same success here in the States with his Black Lizard reissues." Georgie Lewis,

Publisher Comments:

On Midsummer?s Eve, three friends gather in a secluded meadow in Sweden. In the still-sun-lit northern night, they don costumes and begin to role play. But an uninvited guest soon brings their performance to a gruesome conclusion. His approach is careful; his aim is perfect. Three bullets, three corpses. The murderer then carefully photographs the grisly tableau.

Meanwhile, the Ystad police station is experiencing a summer lull. Inspector Kurt Wallander is focusing on living healthier, but his peace of mind is shattered when a fellow officer is murdered. The police slowly realize how little they know about what is going on in their seemingly serene town. An unknown killer is on the loose, but their only lead is a photograph of three dead young people in costume.

Forced to dig more deeply than he?d like into the personal life of one of his colleagues, Wallander?s investigation uncovers something he could never have imagined.

One Step Behind is the fifth book to appear in English in what the Los Angeles Times Book Review calls the ?exquisite? Kurt Wallander series.

There is something in the way that Mankell begins one of his Wallander investigations that keeps me coming back to his books again and again. One Step Behind is a story of young people who are participating in something of a summer solstice, when they are murdered. Wallander investigates with his usual instincts guiding him. I love how he is a real human being with his flaws yet he is still the best at what he does. If readers like the trilogy of the The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, then they will love this mystery!
