Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

With its focus on the social sciences, sciences, and the humanities, this thematically-arranged reader is suitable for any writing-across-the-curriculum approach to freshman composition, interdisciplinary core course, or freshman seminar.

Book News Annotation:

This reader is intended to serve in freshman reading-and-writing- across-the-curriculum courses. The editors (of the U. of California at Santa Barbara and Bay Bath College) present 129 classic and contemporary readings addressing questions of government and politics, art and literature, science and technology, and religion and philosophy. Each of the readings is followed by questions for students to consider in their reading journals. This edition contains a new beginning chapter presenting a model of rhetorical analysis based on Aristotle's Rhetoric. A "rhetorical table of contents" allows users of the texts to organize readings by mode and by aim.
