Jae Steele is a registered holistic nutritionist; she has also been a professional vegan baker and has worked on an East Coast organic farm. Her life experiences and her love of vegan whole foods are at the heart of Get It Ripe, which not only includes uncomplicated yet delicious animal-free recipes, but advice and information on various aspects of holistic vegan living, including cleansing and detox programs, meditation, ethical consumerism, and the connections among mind, body, and spirit.

The one hundred-fifty recipes include Butternut Risotto, Chipotle Black-Eyed Peas with Maple Mashed Sweet Potatoes, Cauliflower Chickpea Curry, Pad Thai, Fettuccini No-Fredo, Cinnamon Pumpkin Soup, Banana Creem Pie, and Cowgrrrl Cookies. I asked for and received this fantastic book for my birthday last month, only on a hunch from a couple online descriptions that it would be a helpful addition to my newly vegan kitchen.

In this cookbook/nutrition guide/eating & living well handbook, I received so much more than I bargained for! The recipes (I've tried at least 2 a week for the last few weeks plus I make her 'green smoothie' every morning) are not difficult, and the directions clear and easy to follow. More than that, the dishes are scrumptious!

I also appreciate the fact that all the recipes are wheat-free (my husband has a wheat sensitivity) and most make use of whole foods, which many people are trying to incorporate more frequently into their meals - I know I am! (The baked goods - one of which is the delectable carob chai cake - obviously have processed grains and sugars - but jae mentions that these should be reserved for infrequent consumption.)

My very favorite part about this book is the introductory sections on nutrition, food storage, grain sprouting, digestion and many other topics that explain the foundation for the recipes to follow. It's truly a holistic approach to choosing a diet and living well through eating well.

I'm thrilled with this book and even after my cat spilled a vase of water on it, forever wrinkling over half the pages, it's at the top of my cookbook stack. I'm sure it will stay there.
