Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Ten years ago, Janet Woititz broke new ground in our understanding of what it is to be an Adult Child of an Alcoholic. Today she re-examines the movement and its inclusion of Adult Children from various dysfunctional family backgrounds who share the same characteristics. After more than ten years of working with ACoAs she shares the recovery hints that she has found to work. Read Adult Children of Alcoholics to see where the journey began and for ideas on where to go from here.

Synopsis:

Describes the symptoms and treatment of alcoholism and examines the ways it can disrupt family relationships.

Melissa Foxx, January 27, 2014 (view all comments by Melissa Foxx)
Having grown up in an alcoholic, dysfunctional home, I spent most of my early 20's trying to teach myself out of the bad coping mechanisms/patterns/ways of communicating that one learns in an alcoholic home life. Without this book, I NEVER would have been able to do as much work on myself as I did. (Plus, its cheaper than a therapist!)

Also before reading this book, I felt isolated and unable to communicate with others about the lasting effects of a childhood in an alcoholic home. After reading it and realizing that the dysfunction that I thought were just "me" problems were actually universal traits among people in alcoholic homes, I felt comforted and started to share more with others for support.
