Publisher Comments:

The host of public television's "Travels in Europe with Rick Steves" offers a series of personal vignettes for an armchair tour of his favorite European travel experiences.

Synopsis:

This guide is an armchair tour of the author's favorite European travel experiences. In a series of personal vignettes, Steves tells of the Swiss schoolteacher who risked Steves's life to show him an edelweiss he couldn't pick, the Seina native who still bears a medieval grudge against Florence, and the Parisian who took a deep whiff of moldy cheese and sighed, "It smells like zee feet of angels."

This is the Rick Steves you haven't met on his travel shows or guide books. Instead of the goofy, slightly rumpled Rick, there is an edge to this memoir. His first experiences as a tour guide were wildly unsuccessful and he had a missionary zeal that was not attractive. This is not what I expected, and yet, it was quite fascinating.
