Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades is an invaluable resource for any gardener looking to become more knowledgeable and grow better vegetables. The book features basic info on soils, composting, chemical-free fertilizing, efficient water usage, and planning, but it is also filled with up-to-date tips on seed sources and new growing and cultivation techniques. Featuring a Earth-friendly focus on organic gardening practices, the book helps readers acquire a foundation of master-gardening knowledge that they can use to organize and plan their own gardens however they want.

Book News Annotation:

Solomon lives in Tasmania now, but every few years still updates his guide for gardeners in the North American Maritime Northwest, first published in 1980. He discusses the usual topics of conventional beginning organic gardening books--soil, composting, water, seeds, predators, and so on--but approaches it all from the particular conditions encountered in the region, such as no sun in the winter and no rain in the summer, and nutrients washed out of the soil by a thousand years of endless rain. Perhaps underlying all other problems, he says, is that Native Americans in Cascadia did not farm and so had only one lesson to teach European settlers about agriculture there, which they have ignored ever since. I really didn't like the condescending tone of this book. I bought it because it was recommended as a good primer for people gardening in Oregon for the first time. But the way the author seems to sneer at people who don't garden all year round (and mocks his neighbors who garden primarily in the summer) really turned me off.

I can't even imagine gardening without this book! Our region is a very unique climate and most gardening books are geared to the hot, hot summers and freezing cold winters of the East Coast. With our buckets of rain leeching through the soil every year, gardening west of the Cascades presents some rewarding and challenging issues.

But fear not and garden on! This thorough resource will break it all down for you in easy-to-follow chapters that are a pleasant read.

One of my favorite features of the book is Solomon's planting schedule so you know what to plant when and can plan out the whole season.

Happy growing!
