Big Sex Little Death: A Memoir

Big Sex Little Death: A Memoir Cover

Review-A-Day

"How many erotic minds did Susie Bright open? Her influence on the happiest cultural sea change of the past quarter-century — the broadening American attitude toward sex, sexuality, and homosexuality — was profound, if indirect. After editing the pioneering lesbian erotic magazine On Our Backs in the 1980s, she published a collection of carnal advice columns in 1990, Susie Sexpert's Lesbian Sex World (Cleis Press), which established her as an uncommon voice of reason on a subject — sex — that causes so many thoughtful people to lose their heads." Peter S. Scholtes, Rain Taxi (Read the entire Rain Taxi review)

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Ever wondered why theres no female voice as bold, erotic, unflinching, and revealing as Norman Mailer, Henry Miller, or Philip Roth? There is. It belongs to Susie Bright.

In this stunning and courageous coming-of-age story, Susie Bright opens her heart and her life. From fearful Irish Catholic Girl Scout to gun-toting teenage revolutionary—and finally the "The Avatar of American Erotica" (NYTimes)—Brights life story is shaped as much by Americas sexual awakening as the national sexual landscape was altered by Bright herself.

In Big Sex Little Death, Bright introduces us to her influences and experiences, including her early involvement with notorious high school radicals The Red Tide as well as the magazine she co-founded in the 1980s, On Our Backs—the first-ever erotic magazine created by women, which turned the lesbian and bisexual community upside down before it took the "straight" world by storm.

Big Sex Little Death is an explosive yet intimate memoir thats pure Susie: bold, free-spirited, unpredictable—larger than life, yet utterly true to life.

"Susie Bright's real life is just as compelling — ;more compelling — than her sex life. And that's saying something." Dan Savage

Review:

"I have a very scary feeling Susie Bright is not making any of this up. Guns, drugs, threesomes, socialist factionalism, a stabbing . . . all before she got her G.E.D.?" Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic

Review:

"Big Sex Little Deathis subtle, hot, enthralling, raw and tender — I loved it. Susie Bright is a national treasure." Josh Marshall, Editor and Publisher, Talking Points Memo

Review:

"The best-named writer in America, Susie Bright has written a witty, wise, and enlightening memoir." Erica Jong
