Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Turning the standard text and design of familiar travel guides on its ear is the mandate of the Jetlag Travel Guide to Molvanîa, the small Eastern European nation keen to position itself as a tourist attraction, despite the fact that it doesn't exist.

Welcome to Molvanîa, the "land-locked republic famous as the birthplace of the polka and whooping cough, and producer of 83% of the world's beetroot." Cultural details, useful phrases, accommodation and restaurant listings, color photos, and maps are found alongside information about the people, the country, and major exports (which include spittoons and low-grade heroin).

Review:

"Brilliantly original and very, very funny. If you buy just one book on Molvania this year, make it this book." Bill Bryson

Review:

"A genuinely funny and utterly surreal book: imagine a Monthy Python guide to Eastern Europe and you?re almost there." Ben Schott, author of Schott's Original Miscellany

Review:

"The idea here — a fake travel guide to a nonexistent country, looking and reading like a Frommer's — may seem like a one-joke gimmick, but the execution, by a trio of Australian satirists, is sublimely brilliant." Neil Genzlinger, The New York Times

Review:

"In format and page layout, this inspired send-up of a travel guide looks exactly like the real thing, and it displays an acute feel for all the clichés of the genre, including testimonials that instruct how to have an uncomfortable 'authentic' experience, rather than a 'bland, westernized' one." The New Yorker

Synopsis:

Bored by Bulgaria? Tired of Turkey? Try Molvania! But don't leave home without the funniest faux travel guide you'll ever read.

I have read this book and the next book on the equally fictitious country of Phaic Tan, and they are both a riot! Be glad there is no Molvanian restaurant in your neighborhood! I can hardly wait for the next book!
