Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Debut author Sam Enthoven delivers a sprawling fantasy epic set in modern day London, about a fourteen-year old boy, Charlie, who thinks he's been given superpowers, but in fact has been possessed by a demon. The adventure brings Charlie — as well as his friend, Jack, and Esme, the one girl raised to stop the demon — from the streets of London into Hell itself, as they prepare for a battle with ultimate stakes.

The book combines the heart-stopping action of superhero comics and movies; the creepy, cool creatures of the best fantasy books; the semisupernatural martial arts fighting of movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Matrix; and a healthy dose of humor to produce a knockout fantasy unlike anything you've seen before.

Review:

"An ambitious and action-packed adventure, the novel will appeal to those who like martial arts movies as well as epic fantasy tales." VOYA

Review:

"Campy humor enlivens the sometimes cliched events....Adventure and invention abound, but tighter plotting would have improved the story." Booklist

Review:

"While this 500-page fantasy could use some editing at times...it is an entertaining read. Enthoven's vision of Hell and the entities there is very captivating and will keep readers turning pages." Children's Literature

Review:

"While Jack's story lacks coherence, the action-packed world keeps the tension high, and Jack's development from spineless follower to everyday guy willing to save the world is satisfying." Kirkus Reviews

Synopsis:

Debut author Enthoven delivers a sprawling fantasy epic set in modern-day London about a 14-year-old boy, Charlie, who thinks he has been given superpowers. The truth is, however, that Charlie has been possessed by a demon.

Synopsis:

Jack's best mate, Charlie, has always been effortlessly cool. When Charlie wakes up one day and finds a mysterious, moving black tattoo on his back, it's a clear sign that he's even cooler than Jack thought. To top it off, Charlie has got super powers also.

Or does he?

Jack soon learns the terrifying truth: Charlie's incredible powers come from an age-old demon called the Scourge, who is using Charlie to bring about its evil master plan.

When the Scourge vanishes with Charlie, Jack and Esme, a girl with super powers of her own, follow their friend from the streets of London into Hell itself, where they face horrors that may well cost them their lives.
