One of the great classics of world literature, Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment is the story of Raskolnikov, a young man who — unable to complete his studies — commits what he calls "justifiable murder." What ensues is as demanding and illuminating for the reader as it is for the main character. If you're familiar with Dante's Divine Comedy then reading this book is an even more enriching experience.

Publisher Comments:

Crime and Punishment, based on Dostoevsky's own experience of the justice and penal system of Tsarist Russia, is a dark tale set in the dingy streets of St. Petersburg, concerning the actions of a murderer who decides to commit homicide as a matter of principle.

I found this book to be much easier to read than most classics. The personalities and culture took a little getting used to, but became endearing after a while. The language was sometimes confusing, but not unbearably so. I do think this book is worth reading.
