This book is an invaluable resource for writers. Familiarity with the Doctor Who universe is not necessary to glean much solid practical advice on plot, characters, pacing, and other technical concerns, in addition to being an unflinchingly honest portrayal of what Davies's goes through to get the right words on the page. For years I've wondered if I'm really meant to be a writer; how can anything that I resist so hard and agonize over so much be right for me? This book answered that question; I found it to be a minor miracle, a revelation, and a tremendous comfort. So often I hear writers talk about not being able to get through a day without writing, or how entire books poured from them in a matter of weeks. I'm not one of those writers, and apparently, neither is Davies. "The hardest part of writing is the writing," says Davies, and that's OK.
