Publisher Comments:

Jonathan Safran Foer emerged as one of the most original writers of his generation with his best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated. Now, with humor, tenderness, and awe, he confronts the traumas of our recent history.

Nine-year-old Oskar Schell has embarked on an urgent, secret mission that will take him through the five boroughs of New York. His goal is to find the lock that matches a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. This seemingly impossible task will bring Oskar into contact with survivors of all sorts on an exhilarating, affecting, often hilarious, and ultimately healing journey.

Synopsis:

Wildly inventive and moving follow-up to the acclaimed and award-winning "Everything Is Illuminated". When nine-year-old Oskar's father is killed in the September 11th attacks, he begins a journey through five boroughs of New York as he attempts to solve the mystery of a key he discovers in his father's closet.

This could very well be one of the most well written books in our century. It is not so much about 9/11 as it is the days that followed. Safra has captured the voice of a child in his writing, but the book is still written for an adult to read. It is also visually stunning, as the words on the page become artwork for the story, sometimes one word on a page, sometimes so many it can't be read.
