Stella Gibbons (1902–1989) was born in London and was a journalist, novelist, poet, and short story writer. Her other novels include Nightingale Wood, Westwood, and Beside the Pearly Waters.

Why did I wait until 2010 to read this gem? It's blend of clever snark, cheerful pluck, and belief in the possibility of better days is the perfect antidote to the ennui of these deflating times.
